Our Patron Saint - St. George
Greatmartyr, Victory-bearer, and Wonderworker George
Commemorated on April 23
Saint George, also known as the Victory-Bearer, was born in Cappadocia into a devout Christian family. After his father’s martyrdom, George’s mother raised him in Palestine. He joined the Roman army, quickly rising in rank due to his bravery. Under Emperor Diocletian, who fiercely persecuted Christians, George openly confessed his faith and opposed the emperor’s orders to persecute Christians.
In response, Diocletian subjected him to relentless tortures, including imprisonment, exposure to sharp wheels, and being forced to wear iron sandals with red-hot nails. Despite these trials, George remained steadfast in his faith, continuously strengthened by divine visions and miracles, including his miraculous survival and healing. He even raised a dead man to life by invoking Christ’s name, leading many witnesses, including prominent officials and Empress Alexandra, to convert to Christianity.
The emperor, enraged by George’s endurance and the growing number of Christian converts, ordered his execution. Before his death, George destroyed idols in a pagan temple by invoking the power of Christ, further affirming his faith and inspiring others. He was beheaded on April 23, 303, receiving the crown of martyrdom. His death marked a significant moment in the eventual triumph of Christianity, as Emperor Constantine would later legalize the faith.
One of Saint George’s most famous miracles, often depicted in iconography, involves saving a town from a dragon. By slaying the beast and calling the people to trust in Christ, he led 25,000 individuals to baptism. This event symbolized his role as a defender of the faith and a protector against evil.
Saint George became a widely venerated figure, especially in Russia, where his image of slaying the serpent adorned Moscow’s coat of arms. Churches, cities, and feast days were dedicated to him, solidifying his legacy as a patron saint of nations and Christian warriors.
George’s life exemplifies courage, faith, and unwavering devotion to Christ, inspiring countless believers throughout history.
